According to the 2019 Global Peace Index, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is the most dangerous country in the world. It has been a war-torn state for decades as it experiences deadly attacks from the Taliban. What is more, Afghanistan has the highest number of deaths from war and terrorism than any other country. Many years of war and a large division of the state stoped the further development; only 38,2% Afghans are able to read and write. Moreover, the state is also the 37th most populous country in the world. These are the reasons why there is a high poverty and many citizens live in a very poor conditions. Furthermore, Afghanistan is famous for its opium production - drug obtained from a special variety of poppy seeds. Today, 90% of the world's opium production comes from this place where, together with agriculture, they are the main source of livelihood for the local population.
Although in the last decade the politics of Afghanistan have been influenced by NATO countries, particularly the United States, in an effort to stabilise and democratise the country many Afghans leave their home country and seek refuge in others.

ReplyDeleteI didn't realise that the levels of literacy are so low there. I guess the fact that girls are not supposed to get education is part of the problem after all women are half of the population and if most of them are illiterate then the general numbers go down too.
