China

People's Republic of China is one of the countries with a communist type of regime. This political system was first introduced in 1949 under Leader Mao Zedong and was based on a lack of private property and the work of each individual for the common good. Although the current vision of the communist state differs significantly from the original one, it still implements many restrictions to everyday life in China. Chinese media is one of the most heavily controlled in the world - authorities have spent milion of pounds on technology that limits internet freedom; all official media publications, television and websites are in some way state owned or state controlled. Despite the Chinese Constitution guaranteeing their legal rights, the people of China, especially the poor, ethnic minorities, migrant workers and political dissidents, have found it difficult to obtain justice in the courts. This issue also concerns women's rights - where they conflict with government policy e.g. ab...

North Korea

Democratic People's Republic of Korea is one of the countries with a totalitarian type of regime. Despite of the name 'People's Republic' it is a pure example of the dictatorship, where all decisions are made by Kim Jong-un - the current ruler. The leader of North Korea considers his country as a 'one-party republic' but the truth is quite opposite and terrifying. The people of Korea are completely isolated from the outside world; there is no access to the World Wide Web or Wi-Fi, even television and media are censored - they know nothing about the world outside. It is forbidden to buy a ticket and fly to another state or visit your relatives in different town. Also when you come to visit North Korea you are not allowed to take photos or even talk to local people without specific permission. The lives of citizens are constantly monitored and controlled by the government so those who do not follow the strict rules face heavy penalties. Some say it's a kind of...

Different types of regimes around the world

A “regime” is the system of government or the set of rules, it comes from the Latin, where means "to rule." Depending on the amount of power the rulers have, we distinguish several types: Totalitarianism, Autocratic and Constitutional system and Anarchy.  Totalitarianism become a synonym  for the absolute power and total control over the lives of citizens. It is characterised by strong central rule and no permission for individual freedom like in Soviet Union and Nazi Germany. At present North Korea, Cambodia, Cuba or Kongo are the prominent examples. An interesting form is the tribal totalitarianism, which exists principally in African countries: Kenya, Zimbabwe or Uganda. It occurs when a political party that represents the interests of a particular tribe dominates the power. The Autocratic system is associated with a single ruler, who arbitrary enforces the law like in China or Egypt. In constitutional regime we have a freedom of speech and religion, whereas Anarchy can oc...
