People's Republic of China is one of the countries with a communist type of regime. This political system was first introduced in 1949 under Leader Mao Zedong and was based on a lack of private property and the work of each individual for the common good. Although the current vision of the communist state differs significantly from the original one, it still implements many restrictions to everyday life in China. Chinese media is one of the most heavily controlled in the world - authorities have spent milion of pounds on technology that limits internet freedom; all official media publications, television and websites are in some way state owned or state controlled. Despite the Chinese Constitution guaranteeing their legal rights, the people of China, especially the poor, ethnic minorities, migrant workers and political dissidents, have found it difficult to obtain justice in the courts. This issue also concerns women's rights - where they conflict with government policy e.g. abuses related to family planning, women's rights come second. For instance, there are more illiterate girls than boys and women only earn around 60% of male earnings. What is more, through the death penalty China executes more people than the rest of the world put together. In 2014, the human rights organisation Amnesty International estimated at least 3,000 people were executed by the Chinese authorities. Although the lives of Chinese citizens are greatly restricted by law, they lead the happy life to which they are accustomed.
